Family Dispute Resolver Training

Resolution Institute is an Approved Dispute Resolution Organisation so you can apply with us for accreditation as a Family Dispute Resolution Provider.

The FDR Regulations 2013 set out the competencies required for accreditation as a Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) Provider. If you would like to become an FDR Provider, the next steps will depend on the experience you already have in mediation and working with families.

We encourage people interested in working as an FDR Provider to find out about work opportunities. There are currently three organisations who employ or contract mediators to provide Government funded/subsidised FDR services. Visit their websites for more information:

Get trained

Already an accredited mediator?

If you are already an accredited and experienced mediator, consider what additional knowledge and skills you need to meet the competencies for FDR accreditation as noted in section 7 of the FDR regulations 2013.

When there is enough interest Resolution Institute runs a one-day FDR training workshop which covers some of the additional skills required. Alternatively we can put you in touch with trainers who can provide private coaching.

Not an accredited mediator?

If you are not an accredited mediator, we recommend you start with mediation training and accreditation.

Depending on other relevant experience you have (for example working with families in other roles such as being a family lawyer or counsellor) you may also need to do an FDR workshop focusing on other competencies required for FDR providers. You may also need to get some experience mediating before seeking FDR Provider accreditation.

Get Accredited

Once you have mediation accreditation, you will need to demonstrate that you meet the competencies for FDR in a professional conversation assessment. A professional conversation assessment is a structured conversation between a candidate and an assessor. The term “Professional Conversations” is owned by Competency International Ltd and used with permission. The following guide gives you tips on preparing for a FDR professional conversation.

If you are not yet accredited as a mediator you will need to apply for our mediation accreditation as well as FDR Provider accreditation.

If you are already an FDR Provider, accredited by another organisation, we may be able to assess you for Resolution Institute FDR Provider accreditation based on evidence of your experience and other accreditations.

Ongoing Professional or Fellow membership of Resolution Institute is required to retain FDR Provider accreditation.

Renew accreditation

Every two years we'll send you a reminder to apply for renewal of your FDR Provider accreditation. To maintain your accreditation you'll need to show us that you've met continuous professional development (CPD) requirements over the two years:

To participate in regular professional supervision
To complete at least 20 hours of CPD in the two year period

Any CPD you complete with us will automatically be recorded on our CPD tracker. You can also add other CPD you complete. Recording CPD as you go makes renewing your accreditations much easier.
