NZ Mediation Assessment I Online I 17 June 2026

Complete the Virtual Mediation Assessment to apply for Resolution Institute Mediation Accreditation

What is a virtual mediation assessment?

A virtual mediation assessment is a 1.5-2 hour simulated mediation conducted using Zoom.

During the simulated mediation, you will play the role of a Mediator, and volunteers will play the role of the two parties in the simulated dispute. A Resolution Institute Assessor will be present throughout the mediation to assess how you managed all aspects of it.

The Assessment Coordinator will facilitate the virtual mediation assessment by starting and recording the simulated mediation. The session will then be overseen by the Assessor. However, the Assessment Coordinator will be available to assist, as required.

How much does it cost to register?

We offer 2 different registration packages to cater for different requirements:

  • Standard Assessment - $790:
    • 1 virtual mediation assessment attempt
  • Assessment Bundle - $1,150:
    • 1 virtual mediation assessment attempt
    • 1-years Professional Membership
    • 1-years Professional Development Subscription

Payment for the mediation assessment can be made by credit card using the registration process, or if you require an invoice to then pay by bank transfer, please contact us at [email protected].

At what times can I do the assessment?

We offer three program times for virtual mediation assessment to take place on the dates offered:

  • 9.00am
  • 11.30am
  • 2.00pm

You will be able to select one of these program times during the registration process. Time slots are on a first-come, first-served basis.

How do I register?

To register, click on the "Register Now" button to the right. You then need to first select the registration package you wish to purchase and then the program time for when you would like to do your virtual mediation assessment.

Once you have registered and payment is made for your virtual mediation assessment, the Assessment Coordinator will contact you within five business days of receiving your registration to provide further details.

How is the virtual mediation assessment conducted?

One week prior to your virtual mediation assessment, you will receive a confirmation email which contains a guide to virtual mediation assessments, a self-assessment form, a simulated mediation scenario and a Zoom meeting link. Prior to the virtual mediation assessment, you will be invited to run through the Zoom controls with the Assessment Coordinator, to ensure you are familiar with the system.

There are four parts to your virtual mediation assessment:

  1. Questionnaire:  When we have received your virtual mediation assessment registration, we will email you a questionnaire to complete along with supporting materials to read, digest and use to complete the questionnaire along with your own experience.  We will provide you with a date to return this questionnaire; however, this must be done prior to your assessment date.
  2. Pre-assessment meeting with Assessor:  Prior to the virtual mediation assessment, you will have a 30-minute Zoom meeting with your Assessor and a chance to chat over the virtual mediation assessment process and to ask any questions you may have around the virtual mediation assessment.
  3. Mediation Scenario: During the simulated mediation you will play the role of a Mediator, and volunteers will play the role of the two parties in the simulated dispute. The simulated mediation session must be 1.5-2 hours long, and a Resolution Institute Assessor will be present throughout. You will be emailed the common facts for your simulated mediation a week prior to your assessment.
  4. Self-assessment: After your simulated mediation, you must complete the questions in the self-assessment form, reflecting on what you think you did well and what you could have done better. We will email you the self-assessment form with your preparation materials.

Our Resolution Institute Assessor will consider your questionnaire, simulated mediation and your self-assessment responses to determine whether you have "demonstrated competency" or have "not yet demonstrated competency". Depending on the Assessor's availability, we will email you the result within four weeks.

Prerequisites

To be eligible to sit a virtual mediation assessment, you must have:

  • Completed a Resolution Institute 5-Day mediation workshop; or
  • Applied to Resolution Institute to have your prior training recognised as having met the requirements of the approval standards of the Resolution Institute Mediation Accreditation scheme in New Zealand.

Our Assessors

Our panel of Assessors are independent of the training team and have significant experience as mediators and assessors.

Your next steps after the Assessment

If you are assessed as demonstrating competency, Resolution Institute will then inform you that you are eligible to hold a Resolution Institute Mediation Accreditation. In order to hold this accreditation, you are required to hold a Professional membership with Resolution Institute. Once you have created a Professional membership, your Resolution Institute Mediation Accreditation will be confirmed and added to your profile.

If you are assessed as having not yet demonstrated competency, you will be contacted by the Assessment Coordinator, who will provide you with a copy of your assessment report and recording. They will be available to support you in working through the areas that need improving and preparing you for another virtual mediation assessment. Resolution Institute supports any additional assessment attempts by providing them at a reduced rate.
